Can Psychedelic Therapy Help Me Quit Smoking?

There is some evidence to suggest that psychedelics may be effective in helping people quit smoking, but it is important to note that more research is needed to fully understand their potential benefits and risks.

Several studies have found that psychedelic substances such as psilocybin (found in certain types of mushrooms) and ayahuasca (a brew made from Amazonian plants) have been associated with increased rates of smoking cessation. For example, a 2014 pilot study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that smokers who received psilocybin-assisted therapy had significantly higher rates of smoking cessation than those who received nicotine patches.

What may not be as clear until further research is done is whether one or two large doses of psychedelics in a therapeutic setting is required for success, or if someone can start a regimen of microdosing and find similar success. With heavy, or “hero” doses, people find that they enter a state of deep reflection about their life which may cause them to make big life changes. Microdosing on the other hand tends to provide smaller incremental improvements and may be more helpful as a follow-up, or a practice that can sustain these larger changes from a more therapeutic dose.

However, it is important to note that the use of psychedelics in a therapeutic setting should only be done under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional who is experienced in working with these substances. Psychedelics can have powerful effects on the mind and body, and their use carries potential risks and side effects.

If you are interested in using psychedelics to quit smoking, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional who can provide you with more information on the potential benefits and risks, and can help you determine if this approach is appropriate for your individual needs and circumstances. Additionally, there may be other evidence-based treatments available that can help you quit smoking, such as nicotine replacement therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.
